Jesus redefined “neighbor.” He said the more important question was “who is the neighbor to the one who is in need?” What “needs” do you see of the neighbors in your world?
I have a neighbor who has been in and out of the hospital the last couple of years and first and formost she needs prayers, but I have also tried to make her and her family dinner and check in on them to see what their needs are and if I can help them.
We have a neighbor who's husband is always traveling out of town, she could use a friend to talk to and do things with during the week, and another neighbors wife has been in and out of the hospital, they could probably use someone to help them out around the house and the yard. We have a third neighbor who is crazy about squirrels and is always trying to save them and build them habitats. He needs his head examined!!
You know, I think we live in a pretty isolated society these days. That is sad. Klint had an opportunity to help one of our neighbors last week and before I knew it, he drove his tractor right up into our driveway (you know you live in Texas when.. ;) and stayed for a long time visiting with us. I think people really need community, we just do not have as much time and opportunity that people had in the past. That is why it is so important to be intentional. Maybe the people who walk away every time we pass need that, too...
